“Château Millie” is a little estate on 18+ acres in the Sullivan County Catskills – fabulously located between the Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center and picturesque Main Street in Narrowsburg on the Delaware River. The home is a unique piece of Catskills history having been in the same family for over 110 years, and has now been restored to a fabulous Victorian-modern gem.
“Château Millie” was aptly named after Millicent Mullineux who was gifted the house in 1910 by her father (also the builder). Millicent (1879-1956) was a Brooklyn Girl – a Teacher of Piano as stated on her elegant business cards, and a local starlet whose name appeared in playbills and The Brooklyn Eagle in 1915. Her lovely oil paintings discovered in the house are signed and dated ’98 – that’s 1898. This stately home must have lured her to the Catskills – because even in the roaring 20’s one needed to #EscapeBrooklyn … to recharge before heading back to absorb New York City’s palpable energy.
*Author has taken artistic liberty with Millicent’s story based on documents and artifacts found in the house.
