Set on 18 wooded acres in the Catskills, Bear Run was designed as an exploration of architecture, interiors, and landscape. Another collaboration between Major Jacks and Wishbone under the Beyond the Black Box design-build partnership, the project offered the freedom to create a home guided by curiosity rather than convention.
Rather than relying on familiar references, Bear Run embraces a more playful approach. Industrial materials meet warm wood, vintage pieces, and unexpected color, while custom millwork and gallery-like circulation create moments of surprise throughout. The result: a residence that feels imaginative without sacrificing livability.

Building speculative homes means designing for an imaginary client. Without a wishlist or committee to guide – or change – decisions, every choice has to earn its place through instinct, experience, conviction, and a commitment to seeing the idea all the way through.
Bear Run was full of those moments. From a blush-colored deck, to vintage street lamps suspended over the kitchen island, to a massive perforated vent hood inspired by a Norwegian hotel. Some ideas reveal themselves only once the final piece falls into place, but we never questioned where they were headed.
